The People Behind AVA Orthopaedics

Our Team

A multidisciplinary team brought together by a shared commitment to early, specialist-led orthopaedic care — and a genuine understanding of what patients and carers experience after injury.

Our Founders' Story

Specialist Advice. Early Direction.

After injury, uncertainty builds quickly.

AVA Orthopaedics provides early orthopaedic specialist advice, so you understand what your injury means, what to do next, and why.

Structured clinical thinking to support clear, informed decisions from the start.

AVA Orthopaedics was founded on a deeply personal understanding of what patients and carers experience in the moments following an injury — uncertainty, urgency, and the pressure to make the right decision without clear direction.

For Melissa Gan and Sally McAuliffe, this was not a theoretical gap in the healthcare system. It was something they observed consistently: patients and families navigating the early stages of injury with questions unanswered, decisions delayed, and pathways unclear.

Not because care was unavailable, but because orthopaedic specialist advice was not accessible early in the decision-making window — often limited by geography, referral pathways, or the practical constraints of attending in-person appointments.

AVA Orthopaedics was established to address this gap.

As Australia's first online model focusing on early, specialist-led orthopaedic decision support, AVA Orthopaedics is delivered entirely via telehealth — a deliberate design that removes the need for patients to travel, wait, or navigate complex systems before receiving specialist input. Through secure, real-time online consultations, patients can be assessed from wherever they are — at home, at work, on the sideline, or in regional and remote settings.

Unlike standard telehealth services, which are typically generalist and episodic in nature, AVA Orthopaedics is purpose-built for musculoskeletal injury assessment.

This virtual model allows for specialist interpretation to occur earlier in the injury pathway, supporting clearer diagnosis, appropriate imaging decisions, and a structured plan — all without unnecessary delay. It also enables carers, parents, or other key supports to be part of the consultation, ensuring shared understanding and aligned decision-making from the outset.

AVA Orthopaedics represents an evolution in how orthopaedic care can be accessed: introducing specialist advice earlier through a purpose-built telehealth model, designed for accessibility, efficiency, and clinical clarity.
