From injury to assessment — what to expect

Same-day and next-day appointments are available. At your consultation, the medical practitioner will take a detailed clinical history and review any existing imaging. Where further imaging is indicated, an MRI or other referral is issued promptly and directed to a provider near you.

Following review of your imaging, your specialist will update your management plan and provide guidance on your return-to-sport pathway. Every step is coordinated by your specialist, including referrals to local providers where in-person review or surgical planning is required, and working with your club physio or a physiotherapist of your choice.

Get answers sooner. AVA Orthopaedics assesses, investigates and diagnoses your injury early, helping determine whether surgery is required or if the best path is non-surgical treatment.

Do I need an MRI?

One of the first questions athletes ask after an injury is whether they need a scan. The answer depends on the nature and severity of your injury, and that determination is best made by a specialist.

At your AVA Orthopaedics consultation, your specialist will assess your clinical history and any imaging you already have. If an MRI is indicated, a referral will be issued that same day. This means you are not waiting through multiple GP visits before someone with the right expertise advises on what imaging you actually need.

Early, appropriate imaging matters. The findings from your scan directly inform your diagnosis, your management plan, and your return-to-sport timeline.

When can I return to sport?

This is the question every athlete wants answered as soon as possible. The reality is that return-to-sport timelines depend on the injury, its severity, your response to treatment, and whether surgery is required.

An orthopaedic specialist can provide a more accurate answer because they understand the injury itself — from the underlying tissue damage and imaging findings through to both rehabilitation and surgical options. This allows your AVA Orthopaedics specialist to develop a return-to-sport plan based on what your injury actually requires, rather than relying on a generic estimate.

Case Study

Rapid access to specialist orthopaedic advice following a basketball injury

A 23-year-old basketball player from regional NSW was playing on a Saturday afternoon when she jumped to contest the ball and landed awkwardly on one leg. As she landed, she felt her knee "pop" and was unable to continue playing.

Over the weekend her knee became increasingly painful and swollen, making it difficult to walk and leaving her concerned about the severity of the injury.

On Monday morning, she attended her local physiotherapist who, following an assessment, recommended she seek specialist orthopaedic advice through AVA Orthopaedics.

Within two hours of contacting AVA Orthopaedics, she had completed an appointment where a detailed history of the injury and discussion of her symptoms took place. Based on the mechanism of injury and her presentation, further investigation with an MRI was recommended. She was fortunate to secure an MRI appointment at her local radiology provider that same evening.

The following afternoon, less than 74 hours after sustaining the injury, she met with an orthopaedic surgeon through AVA Orthopaedics to review her MRI results and discuss the available management options. The MRI confirmed a complete tear of her anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). While this was not the diagnosis she had hoped for, the consultation provided clarity regarding the nature of the injury, the likely recovery pathway and the treatment options available to her.

After discussing both operative and non-operative considerations, a decision was made to commence a structured rehabilitation program before considering ACL reconstruction surgery.

Outcome

Within 74 hours of injury, the patient had received specialist orthopaedic assessment, undergone appropriate imaging, reviewed the results with an orthopaedic surgeon, and developed a management plan tailored to her circumstances and goals.

Individual circumstances vary. This case study is provided for educational purposes only and does not constitute medical advice. Treatment recommendations are based on each patient's individual history, examination findings and imaging results.
